MIDLAND , Mich. June 19, 2025. Freudenberg e-Power Systems (FEPS) announces XWAVE: a new stackable battery system for maritime vessels. XWAVE is an innovative approach to battery design allowing for customized arrangements and purpose-built solutions for fully battery powered and hybrid vessels.
FEPS has leveraged a decade of experience in maritime battery solutions to develop XWAVE to meet the growing needs for electrification of the maritime industry. The stackable battery system features the Gen 3 SHP mid-nickel, single crystal power cells, state-of-the-art Battery Management System (BMS), and telematics system . XWAVE enables naval architects, shipyards, and integrators to customize the power and energy set up to each vessel's specific needs. The Gen 3 SHP power cells, designed in-house, provide the system with the capability of high charge and discharge power, competitive energy density, and high cycle life.
XWAVE will allow customers to reduce emissions and optimize space on board. The versatile system accommodates new build configurations and integrates with existing systems, enhancing the efficiency and functionality of the vessel’s operation while allowing for increased energy density and larger installations.
“XWAVE was developed with our customers in mind, who told us they need a battery system with a more flexible design, and ample energy to power everything from ferries to cargo ships,” says Lisa McKenzie, President and General Manager for Battery Systems at Freudenberg e-Power Systems. “This new system builds on our proven track record powering vessels in the maritime market while adapting to the changing needs of the industry.”
XWAVE answers the call for the growing need for electrification for the world’s oceans and ports. The International Maritime Organization has drafted regulations that would require net-zero emissions for ships by or around 2050. With these more stringent standards, Global Market Insights projects the demand for hybrid-and fully electric vessels will result in an increased demand for these vessels and expects the market to grow 24% annually between 2024 and 2030. The end-user experience is also improved by adopting e-mobility solutions. The vessels are quieter; passengers say they provide a smoother ride, and they cause less disruption to marine life.
XWAVE consists of building blocks that can be connected in series; these building blocks are modules. Every module has a capacity of 17kWh and a nominal voltage of 132V . The modules and the battery disconnect unit (BDU) can be connected in series up to a total voltage of 1048V . The system can be customized to the size of the room in the vessel without compromising power. The voltage and height of the stack are independent from each other . Up to 24 strings can be connected in parallel to meet the energy and power requirements of the application.
The FEPS battery management system (BMS) continuously monitors the system to ensure its safe and reliable performance and can be integrated with telematics system software to provide customers with crucial information for maintaining, servicing, and operating the system within optimal limits.
Freudenberg e-Power Systems is currently powering more than 30 hybrid electric and fully electric vessels worldwide. XWAVE will be available in 2027.
